Wedding Invitation Wording Steps

When writing a wedding invitation there’s standard information that you need to include. It’s essential that guests know all the details. They need to know when, where, and what time the wedding is.

Wedding invitations tend to be traditional and there’s a common format that many couples choose to follow.

Following are the steps required for a traditional wedding invitation. If you implement these in your invitation, you can be assured that you have covered everything needed.

Step 1

  • Start with the names of those hosting the event. This is usually the parents of the bride but it can be the parents of both the bride and groom or close friends. This is the couple’s preference.

Step 2

  • Then you want a line that says you “request” the honor of the person’s presence at the wedding.

Step 3

  • Add a line that says how the hosts are related to the couple, i.e. “marriage of their daughter”, “marriage of their children”

Step 4

  • Place a line that says the bride and groom. Use only the bride’s first and middle names and use the groom’s full name. For example, “Jane Elizabeth to wed Thomas Alan Smith’.

Step 5

  • Next, goes the wedding date.

Step 6

  • The next line is the time of the wedding.

Step 7

  • Add the location of the wedding whether it’s a church or hotel.

Step 8

  • The next line is where you place the city and state where the wedding is to take place.

Step 9

  • Finally add the details of the reception location, if there is one.

It’s very important to be very specific for all the locations you describe. To avoid misunderstandings it is suggested to add a small map of the location of the Wedding and another one of the reception.

That’s how most couples make a traditional wedding invitation and it’s a format that is commonly accepted. It can also be varied if the couple is holding the wedding themselves.

Make it your way

The main thing to remember is that your wedding invitation, sets the tone for the type of wedding you are having. If you are having a casual ceremony at your home, you want the Wedding Invitation wording and tone, to reflect that. You can still follow the format shown but use words that reflect a more casual nature.

For example, instead of saying you request the honor of someone’s presence, you can say you would be delightful or happy or pleased if the invitee could join the occasion.
Another modern twist is, instead of saying that the bride is getting married to the groom, to write that the two are getting married and they use the word “and”. For instance, they will write

“the marriage of Jane Smith AND Tom Jones.”.

This is considered a more egalitarian approach. Keep in mind that the best Wedding Invitation Wording is the one that reflects your personality.

Date

Another important tip for your Wedding Invitation wording for formal weddings, is to write out the time and date of the occasion, as in eighteenth instead of 18. If you are going for a more informal style, it’s fine to use numbers instead of writing out the date.

Wedding location

When it comes to the location, don’t forget to include your wedding’s address. The exception to this rule is if you are getting married somewhere that’s well known, such as a museum or landmark. Then just naming the place is sufficient. But, as we already said above, be careful with the directions you give and add a small map in the invitation.

The reception

You place the fact that you are having a reception on the invitation, but you don’t need to include the details of the reception. That’s because it is common practice to create a separate card with details of the reception to include when you mail out the invitations.
People can then take this card with them when they come to your wedding, so they have the reception address and map on hand. Most people assume that a reception will include a full dinner. If you have decided to have just cocktails, it’s important to note that on the card. That way your guests can plan accordingly.

Finally

The main thing to remember when it comes to wedding invitations is that while your wedding is your special day, it’s also an event that you are hosting for your guests. Include all necessary information to make sure your day goes smoothly. Just make it with your own style, that reflects your personality!
